A Guide to New Zealand

The country, located south of Australia with its capital Wellington, comprises two major islands, the north and the south, and several minor isles. The nation contains huge mountains and impressive scenery and terrain. Its official languages are its native dialect (Maori), the New Zealand sign language, and English, although English is most prevalent. The most populated city is Auckland, located on the northern island, on the same site as the capital. The country, which is also known as the least corrupted area, is highly developed, has a high climate, and is mostly filled with more animals than humans. Besides that, it also possesses a rich and diverse culture, fascinating landscapes, and functional volcanoes. The country is made up of different ethnicities, with Europeans having the largest percentage, followed by the indigenous Maori and smaller percentages of people of Pacific and Asian descent.

A Brief History of New Zealand

The land was first discovered by the Maoris’ predecessors, the Polynesians, around 1200-1300 AD. Then, later, came the Dutch European explorer, Abel Tasman, in the year 1642. He was also the one who gave the country its name before it became anglicized. After a few years, other European explorers visited the country and tried to pressure the indigenous people into trading their territories, which later led to a war and lots of their lands being seized. The country became independent in the year 1907, and before that, several tribes and ethnic communities settled there, making it multi-ethnic.

New Zealand Culture and Traditions

The nation has a mix of mostly the influences of the European and Maori cultures rather than those of the other settlers, with the earlier immigrants introducing their diverse lifestyles and ceremonies. Their delicious cuisine is a blend of European dishes and their native delicacies. They also have numerous festivals, traditions, and customs. An example is the Haka, an ancestral battle dance that is very popular. The people of New Zealand are particular about their culture and beliefs, but they remain welcoming and receptive to other cultures and people.

New Zealand’s Weather

The climate is mostly moderate and mild, although it changes rather wildly and unexpectedly. It could change from one condition to another in a day. It is advisable to be well-equipped and prepared for the abrupt change in temperature as you travel New Zealand with your partner.  To fully appreciate the wonders of New Zealand and enjoy its many summer activities, the best period to visit the region is during the summer months (March and December).

Iconic Areas to Tour as a Couple

There are a lot of exciting and impressive destinations to visit in New Zealand. The country is quickly becoming a fast-rising tourist location with its historic sites, fascinating nature, and captivating beauty. The places below would make perfect destinations for couples.

Auckland

This is New Zealand’s largest and most populated city; it is also one of the most famous tourist locations in the country. Located by the harbor, with amazing beaches and several fun activities, the city is a great tourist attraction. Fun places to tour include its art gallery, museums, sky tower, and harbors.

Queenstown

Well-known as the adventure and de-stressing capital because of its various thrilling and adventurous recreations, Queenstown is also home to notable mining communities and vineyards.
It offers exciting activities like skydiving, paragliding, bungee jumping, rafting, boat cruises, and so much more to get your heart pumping.

Christchurch

This city is predominantly European, with English architecture and heritage. The streets are thriving and filled with creative and artistic projects that are just waiting to be admired.  Hike to the Brighton dock, a wonderful spot for peace and relaxation as well as a perfect site to watch the sunset. Explore its various picturesque towns while enjoying its views and delicious food.

Waitomo

This is a village located on the northern island, known for its vast and intricate cave networks. The region not only boasts natural beauty but is also famous for its glow-worms, which can be experienced through a boat tour and blackwater rafting.

Wellington

The beautiful capital city is endowed with amazing beaches and sights to enjoy with your partner. Book a cable car and enjoy the views from an elevated level, or visit the museum filled with ancient Maori and European history.  Also, explore the city gallery, the botanical gardens filled with different flower species, and its eco-sanctuary, where the country’s native-born and endangered birds can be observed.

Conclusion

It is a nation filled with several islands that can be visited at any given time with different means of transportation to get around. The region is mostly known for its charming nature and tons of attractions to sightsee. For nature lovers, it is richly blessed with caves, wildlife, and beaches to explore, while thrill-seekers have lots of activities to choose from and experience.
