Numerous rites that are performed before, during, and after a Hindu wedding are typical. Preparations include a number of things like deciding the venue, planning the date & time for the ceremonies, Designing Exclusive Hindu Wedding Invitations for your guests, and whatnot. However the most important of these are the ceremonies. They are an expression of the joy that people experience at festive occasions steeped in tradition.

Hindu weddings are elaborate affairs that take place over many days. Performing rituals is a crucial part of what relatives do, in addition to bringing joy and energy to the surroundings. That is why Indian weddings, particularly Hindu wedding rituals, are referred to be private celebrations. However, there is a lot more to learn about the conventional north Indian Hindu marriage traditions. There is a lot to discuss and appreciate during Indian weddings. Let’s explore the pre and post-Hindu wedding rituals in detail.

Ceremonies That Are Held Before The Wedding

  • The Engagement: The engagement celebration, which is regarded as one of the most significant pre-marriage rituals not just in Hindu marriages but in those of other faiths as well, is often a private affair attended by close friends and family members from both the bride’s and the groom’s sides.

  • Mehendi: Applying henna on the bride and groom’s hands and the bride’s feet is part of the Mehendi ceremony. This lovely occasion often happens in the evening, with plenty of music and dancing from family and friends. Several of the female attendees also have Mehendi art done.
  • Dance & Sangeet Night: The Sangeet Ceremonies are now held separately, despite the fact that they should traditionally be a component of the official engagement occasion. As a result, with this celebration, the excitement of the wedding continues for an extra day. Dance performances and specific themes are arranged for this event from both bride’s & groom’s sides.
  • Tilak: As the foundation for the relationship between the two families, the Tilak Ceremony is valued. The male relatives of the bride’s family visit the groom at his home to apply tilak on his forehead during this auspicious occasion. Though there are other variations of the Tilak ritual in various regions of the state, the one stated is the most often observed. Additionally, in many places throughout the nation, music and dancing play a significant role in this event.
  • Haldi: The Haldi Ceremony is one of the most enjoyable aspects of an Indian wedding. Throughout the nation, many regional variations of this auspicious day can be found. In this ritual, haldi paste is applied to the bodies of both the bride and groom the night prior or on the morning of the wedding day. This ceremony follows the Mehendi tradition in a few Indian states.

  • Roka: The Roka ceremony is regarded as the wedding’s initial stage. In a sense, it serves as a formal declaration of the bride and groom’s agreement to become married. The families of the two sides get together for the first time at this ritual to share presents, dried fruits, and sweets. In certain cultures, the priest conducts a puja.

Ceremonies That Are Held After The Wedding

  • Bride’s Vidai: The conclusion of the wedding is symbolized by the emotional Vidai Ceremony. It is a traditional aspect of weddings for the bride to go outside the doors while crying and tossing five fistfuls of grains over her head to symbolize riches and success. This tradition essentially says that the bride has returned the favours her parents have shown her throughout the years.

  • Ashirwad Ceremony: This very moving ceremony is held to ask the senior family members and other well-wishers for their blessings. The bride’s family, together with other family members and friends, travel to the groom’s house for this ritual. They give the newlyweds sweets or fruit, as well as gold, silver, or diamond jewellery, and then the couple touch their feet & takes their blessings.
  • Pag Phera Ritual: Hindus also observe Pag Phera as a significant post-wedding ritual. In this ceremony, the bride’s brothers accompany her from the in-laws’ home back to her own, where she spends almost three days. After the wedding, the groom visits her home to ask her parents for their blessing before returning with the bride to his home.
